Recently been obsessed with Amsterdam based photographer, Lois Cohen and her stylized, saturated portraits. Inspired by badass, warrior women she finds a “balance between her vision and the attitude/character of the model.” What I love about her work is the photo’s aren’t necessarily pretty. The female subjects aren’t prim, proper or propped up, they aren’t smiling and perpetuating stereotypes. Reminiscent of characters created by author Gillian Flynn, who explores the dark side of femininity in her novels. These women aren’t killers, but they have the capacity to kill, to go beyond the soft, nurturing, subservient caricature. They take no shit, exuding strength. Which photo is your favorite? Why?
