Make Miya’s Law National

Miya Marcano was an Afro-Latina of Caribbean descent murdered by her co-worker. Endeavoring to remain safe she worked at the leasing office of her apartment complex, while attending school to become a doctor. Gorgeous, she attracts the attention of Armando Caballero, the buildings maintenance man.

Armando Caballero bombarded her with unhinged text messages, going as far as proffering his life savings. Miya Marcano refused his advances kindly and cordially on every occasion. Unable to stand the rejection, he uses his keys to enter her apartment without permission and waits in her room. Unaware, Miya goes home after work to grab her luggage for a flight to meet her grandmother and is murdered at 19 years old. Armando commits suicide three days after taking her life, resulting in the creation of Miya’s Law:

  1. When a maintenance person comes, the tenant must be informed 24 hours in advance.
  2. The apartment complex logs every time a member of their staff enters an apartment.
  3. Background checks conducted on every employee, especially those with direct access to keys & units.

The blind fury I feel at women being killed by fragile, mentally ill, angry, misogynistic men who view us as property, can’t be defined. This was someone’s daughter, sister, best friend, cousin. WOMEN DON’T OWE YOU SHIT. NO MEANS FUCKING NO. Take the L and move on. Thus far the law has passed in Florida and Virginia. Let’s honor her by making it national. Please watch Lifetime’s Text Me When You Get Home for the details of this disturbing crime. Also visit the Miya Marcano Foundation. Via: Cherney Amahara TV
