There are four interconnected stories in this book. Focusing on three slaves and one master. All originating from a plantation fire during a slave rebellion on Magnolia Row. The master’s punishment pushed two enslaved lovers over the edge. With nothing else to lose they decided to go out with a bang, that sparks fear in the vitriolic whites and hope in their victims.
This book it lit, pun intended. It’s giving Alabama Riverboat vibes. For me it was extremely cathartic. The mistreated getting their lick backs healed my soul. Giving as good as they got, the black slave master seeking to be white adjacent wasn’t spared. A stark reminder to the descendants, such as myself, of how much our ancestors suffered and fought for us to be considered human. Not property. Honor them always.
