Phat Tuesday And The L.A Riots

Today marks the L.A Riots 32nd anniversary, a fact I remember thanks to Sublime. For six days Los Angeles was looted and burned to the ground, amassing over one billion dollars in damages. The riots were a response to police brutality, when the officers who used excessive force on Rodney King weren’t charged. Prior to the incident Cops, a Fox Network “reality”show following police officers on duty, purposely edited the episodes to perpetuate stereotypes. That’s right folks Rupert Murdoch allowed the distorted input of racists to air every week. Rodney King shed light on the truth regarding police brutality, not the caricatures of colored people as lawless savages Murdoch displayed.

As a result of the Riots, black comedians in the hood weren’t able to showcase their talent to the right audiences. Thus Phat Tuesdays by Guy Torry was created. Every Tuesday he’d host a cast of colored comedians on the L.A Strip, allowing them to perform for industry folks and delighted audiences. It snowballed, exceeding everyone’s expectations, catapulting folks to stardom even, Kevin Hart, Martin Lawrence, and of course Dave Chappelle. Side note: O.J Simpson’s freedom was also a byproduct of the riots, a way to get even.

Endeavoring to ease the trauma of being racially profiled, murdered, viewed as disposable, they made fun of their plight. Cracking jokes is how they dealt with the pain of fearing for their lives. Going back to my initial point, Dave Chappelle isn’t transphobic (read Dave Chappelle The Equal Opportunity Icon), he treats everyone the same. That line of reasoning would make him anti-black. I furthered my point by stating Kanye West is actually transphobic (read ElDorado: Everything The Nazi’s Hated). Then what happened? A trans woman is viciously attacked at his Rolling Loud set, haven’t heard a peep from the same community that came for Chappelle. When lambasting people, do your due diligence instead of making baseless accusations and keep the same energy for those who earned it. Via: Hulu Rewind The 90’s (Reality Revolution)

Dave Chappelle The Equal Opportunity Icon

Dave Chappelle’s comedy special is hilarious, I watched it twice. He’s a genius and the only person who genuinely believes in equality. Trans people, disabled people, no one is impervious. I guess it’s only acceptable when he makes fun of black suffering though right? Perpetuating black stereotypes right? When he’s playing an endearing crackhead, a slave being whipped, a black KKK member. So funny he quit his eponymous show, due to how accepting everyone was of these offensive caricatures. Caricatures they truly believe us to be, ones you created, that’s the goal of racism.

You lapped that shit up. Devoured it. You wanted more. Keep the same fucking energy. My suffering hasn’t ended, as you can see, with the countless hate crimes I’ve encountered as a black woman. I’m a fucking Goddess of war and these white supremacists were still foolish enough to believe in their white lies of superiority. That they could abuse me with no consequences. Do you see me lambasting a comedian for it?
Guess what trans women, this is what it means to be a woman. To be treated like literal shit, belittled, have your intellect questioned, told it’s your fault when you’re abused, told to stay in the kitchen, live your life in fear of violence, except we’ve had to do that since birth, going everywhere in herds for safety. Do note I barely see any of you posting for women’s day either, but I’m saving that for another article. The sex you were born into made these rules for us. Welcome to the club. Ps you aren’t special, he roasts everybody, he’s equal opportunity like that.
Do let me know when racism and sexism have been dismantled, to ever fix your lips about others not understanding suffering, or fighting to be who they are. He’s a black man, he can’t even wear a hoodie without fear of death and persecution.

As for the media, you know who sounds like a broken record? It’s not Dave Chappelle. It’s literally every article that wrote the same headline about his obsession with trans people. Not one original piece. Turns out you guys are the joke. On that note Dave Chappelle you’re free to go. And they wonder why I’m their karma. You did an amazing job. R.I.P Paul Mooney

Been processing this and wanted to shut down, not acknowledging his passing at all. I watched him on Chappelle’s Show ‘Ask A Black Person,’ but this legendary comedians work spans decades, writing for Richard Pryor. Your raw candor juxtaposed with a stoic face always made me laugh, rest in peace king. Via: All Things Mooney
