The World Is Broken

“Men still rule the world and as a result the world is broken. Men still hold most positions of power, men control governments, men control the media, and it is always men who start wars. Men have tricked women into thinking they see us as equals, but real equality, for all women everywhere, still feels like little more than a pipe dream.”

“Beautiful Ugly” By Alice Feeney

Wow. A total and complete mind fuck. Writer Grady Green awaits the arrival of his wife Abby Goldman, to celebrate what could possibly be a New York Times bestseller for him. Impatient, he calls for an eta. The lovebirds are on the phone when Abby spots someone splayed out in the middle of the road. A good samaritan, she goes against her husband’s warnings and checks to see if they’re injured. This is the last time he speaks to his wife, the line goes dead and Abby disappears. A journalist who exposes powerful men for abuse, Grady worries someone set her up to die. A year later his life continues to spiral into destitution, unable to cope without the love of his life, he’s incapable of writing another book. The money starts to dry up, when his agent, Abby’s godmother, suggests he goes to cabin on a remote Island to focus on his craft. An offer he can’t refuse, since it comes with a free lodgings and the silence required for him to create. Once there Grady can’t distinguish between reality and his hallucinations, haunted by visions of what he thinks is his wife all over the Island. Is it Abby or is he losing his mind?

Finishing the book I came to the same conclusion about Alice Feeney as I did the author of “The Silent Patient,” she’s fucked in the head. The plot twists were completely unexpected. I never would’ve guessed the ending. My mind is still reeling. A must read. I mean…speechless. All is not what it seems. Not even close. Via: Barnes & Nobles
